Winter tire requirement: when you really need them
Many believe winter tires are mandatory from October to Easter. In fact, Germany has a 'situational' winter tire requirement: what matters is not the date but the weather.

What you should do now
- 1
1. Check the tires
Do your winter tires bear the Alpine symbol (snowflake in a mountain)?
- 2
2. Act in slippery conditions
In wintry conditions, drive only with suitable tires, otherwise leave the car parked.
- 3
3. Mind the tread
Ensure sufficient tread depth (at least 4 mm recommended for winter tires).
- 4
4. Check any fine
If you receive a fine notice, you can (have someone) review the allegations and circumstances.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a fixed winter tire requirement in Germany?
No, none tied to the calendar. A situational winter tire requirement applies (§ 2 Abs. 3a StVO): in wintry road conditions such as black ice, packed snow, or slush, you may only drive with suitable tires (Alpine symbol). On a dry road in winter, by contrast, there is no obligation.
What are the consequences of driving without winter tires in snow and ice?
Anyone who drives in wintry conditions without suitable tires commits an administrative offense: a fine and a point are possible, and more in the event of obstruction or an accident. There can also be insurance-related disadvantages. Look for the Alpine symbol and sufficient tread depth.
