Your chances of getting your money back

An orphan's pension generally exists up to 18, with education/studies or a recognized voluntary service until at most 27 (§ 48 SGB VI). If one parent dies, it is a half-orphan's pension, if both die a full-orphan's pension.
The orphan's own income has for some years no longer been credited toward the orphan's pension. Transition periods between education phases of up to four months are generally bridged.

What you should do now

  1. 1

    1. File the application

Apply for the orphan's pension with the pension insurer. For minor children, the parent with custody takes care of this.

  2. 2

    2. Attach proof

Attach the death certificate, birth certificate and, from 18, proof of education or studies.

  3. 3

    3. Prove education beyond 18

For payment beyond 18, regularly submit proof of education/enrollment.

  4. 4

    4. Report transitions

When changing from school to education/studies, state the transition period; short gaps are usually covered.

How to spot the scam

  • After the 18th birthday, no proof of education is submitted and the payment stops.
  • A disability that would allow an extension is not stated.
  • Longer gaps between education phases are not explained.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the orphan's pension paid?

Generally until the 18th birthday. If the child is in education, studies or a recognized voluntary service, until at most the 27th birthday. In cases of a disability that prevents independent maintenance, even beyond that.

Is the orphan's income credited?

No, the orphan's own income has for some years no longer been credited toward the orphan's pension. So a side job does not reduce the orphan's pension.

What is the difference between a half and full orphan's pension?

A half-orphan's pension exists if one parent has died and the other is still alive; a full-orphan's pension if both parents have died. The full-orphan's pension is higher.
