When must I form a rescue lane?
As soon as traffic on motorways or out-of-town roads with at least two lanes per direction slows or stops (§ 11 StVO). You must form the lane immediately when traffic slows, not only when an emergency vehicle is visible. It runs between the outermost left lane and the remaining lanes.
What does it cost to fail to form a rescue lane?
Anyone who fails to form a rescue lane or drives in it without authorization must expect a fine, a point in the driving aptitude register and possibly a driving ban. If emergency services are thereby hindered or endangered, the sanctions increase accordingly.
