What you should do now
- 1
1. Open a dispute in your PayPal account
In 'Activity', go to the payment and open a dispute in the Resolution Center, ideally starting with 'Problem with the order'.
- 2
2. Escalate to a buyer protection claim
If the seller does not respond or you cannot reach a solution, escalate the dispute to a buyer protection claim. PayPal then decides.
- 3
3. Upload evidence
Upload the order confirmation, chat history, tracking and photos (if the goods are wrong or defective); this strengthens your case.
- 4
4. For 'friends and family': other routes
Here buyer protection does not help. Call your bank (recall) and file a criminal complaint, with all the evidence.
How to spot the scam
- The seller expressly asks for payment via 'friends and family' (this bypasses buyer protection).
- Pressure to pay quickly outside the platform.
- Offers far below market value.
Frequently asked questions
Does PayPal buyer protection apply to 'friends and family'?
No. Buyer protection only applies to payments as 'goods and services'. For 'friends and family' you have to use other routes (bank, criminal complaint).
How long do I have to open a case?
For 'goods and services' usually up to 180 days after the payment. Even so, do not wait too long.
What if the seller does not respond?
Then you escalate the dispute to a buyer protection claim; PayPal reviews the case and decides.
