Travel costs to the doctor: when the insurer pays for the taxi

Anyone who is ill cannot always get to treatment themselves. But the health insurer does not automatically pay travel costs; for outpatient appointments in particular, strict requirements apply. With the right prescription and approval it works anyway.

Your chances of getting your money back

Trips to inpatient treatment are usually covered. Trips to outpatient treatment are only paid by the insurer in exceptional cases and generally only after prior approval (§ 60 SGB V).
No prior approval is needed for, among others, certain ongoing treatments (for example dialysis, chemotherapy or radiotherapy) or in cases of severe mobility impairment (for example the aG, Bl or H markers, or care level 3 with permanent mobility impairment, or 4/5). The statutory co-payment remains.
