Voucher expired? Often it is still valid anyway
The voucher says 'valid until ...' and the date has passed? Do not give up so quickly: very short time limits in the terms and conditions are often invalid. Vouchers in principle only lapse after three years.

What you should do now
- 1
1. Determine the year of issue
When was the voucher issued? The limitation period runs 3 years from the end of that year.
- 2
2. Demand redemption
Demand redemption (or, if not honored, a payout of the residual value) in writing and refer to the 3-year period.
- 3
3. Challenge a short time limit
If the provider invokes a short time limit, point out that such clauses are often invalid.
- 4
4. Secure the residual value
If a short time limit has expired within the 3 years, you can at least demand the value (possibly less lost profit).
Frequently asked questions
How long is a voucher valid?
In principle three years from the end of the year in which it was issued (§§ 195, 199 BGB). A shorter period printed by the retailer is only permissible in exceptional cases and is frequently invalid.
Do I get money instead of redemption?
If the retailer refuses redemption within the validity period or no longer provides the service, you can as a rule demand the voucher value (possibly less a calculated profit share) in money.
