Pension not enough? Apply for old-age basic security

The pension is nowhere near enough? No one has to live below the subsistence level in old age. Old-age basic security tops up a pension that is too low, and unlike in the past, the children usually do not have to contribute.

Application / objection

Your chances of getting your money back

Anyone who has reached the age limit (or is permanently fully unable to work) and whose income and assets are below the level of need is entitled to basic security in old age and in case of reduced earning capacity (§ 41 ff. SGB XII).
Important: your children's income is generally not drawn upon, as long as their annual income is below 100,000 euros. Many forgo the application out of shame, wrongly.

What you should do now

  1. 1

    1. Check the entitlement

Is your pension or income below the basic-security need (standard rate plus reasonable housing costs)? Then the application is worthwhile.

  2. 2

    2. Apply at the social welfare office

Apply for basic security at the responsible social welfare or basic-security office.

  3. 3

    3. Attach documents

Pension and income statements, the lease and bank statements prove your need.

  4. 4

    4. Object if refused

If it is refused or granted too low, you can file an objection within one month (§ 84 SGG).

Frequently asked questions

Do my children have to pay for my basic security?

As a rule no. In old-age basic security, an adult child's income is only drawn upon if their annual income is above 100,000 euros. Below that, the children's income is disregarded, so apply for the benefit without shame.

Who is entitled to old-age basic security?

People who have reached the age limit (or are permanently fully unable to work) and whose income and assets do not cover the need (the standard rate plus reasonable accommodation costs) (§ 41 ff. SGB XII). You file the application at the social welfare office.
