Flight cancelled: compensation, refund and alternative transport

In the event of cancellation you can choose between a full ticket refund and alternative transport to your destination (EU Regulation 261/2004). In addition you are often entitled to compensation of 250 to 600 euros depending on the distance.
The compensation payment is not due if the airline informed you in good time (as a rule at least 14 days in advance) or if extraordinary circumstances existed (e.g. severe weather). Delays due to technical or staffing issues are usually not extraordinary circumstances.

How much compensation is there for a cancellation?

Depending on flight distance, 250 euros (up to 1500 km), 400 euros (within Europe over 1500 km or 1500 to 3500 km) or 600 euros (over 3500 km), in addition to the refund or alternative transport, provided no exemption applies.

When is the compensation not due?

If the airline informs you in good time (as a rule at least 14 days before departure) or if extraordinary circumstances existed that could not be avoided even with reasonable measures. Technical defects or staff shortages usually do not count.

Do I get my money or a voucher?

You are entitled to a refund of the ticket price in money; a voucher is only permitted with your express consent. Do not let yourself be pushed into a voucher.
