Two electricity contracts by mistake: dissolving a double energy contract

A double energy contract arises quickly, for example through a foisted contract, an accidental double registration or a forgotten old contract. But for one home only one contract can be active. It is important to end the unwanted contract quickly and stop double payments.

Your chances of getting your money back

A contract recently concluded at the door, by phone or online you can usually revoke within 14 days (§ 312g BGB). This way an accidentally concluded second contract often dissolves most easily.
If the contract can no longer be revoked, a cancellation comes into consideration. For one consumption point only one contract is actually supplied anyway; double direct debits you can have reversed.

What you should do now

  1. 1

    1. Review the contracts

Get an overview of which contracts exist and which one supplies you.

  2. 2

    2. Revoke the unwanted contract

If the 14-day deadline is still open, revoke the unwanted contract clearly and in writing.

  3. 3

    3. Otherwise cancel

If revocation is no longer possible, cancel the superfluous contract at the earliest possible date.

  4. 4

    4. Stop double payments

Stop double direct debits (reverse the direct debit) and demand a refund of amounts paid too much.

How to spot the scam

  • A contract was foisted on you at the door or on the phone.
  • Installments are debited by two providers.
  • An accidental double registration when moving goes unnoticed.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get rid of an accidental second contract?

Most easily by revocation, if the contract was recently concluded at the door, by phone or online, for which you usually have 14 days (§ 312g BGB). Otherwise you cancel the unwanted contract at the earliest possible date.

What happens with double direct debits?

For one consumption point only one contract is actually supplied. Double direct debits you can have reversed through your bank (within eight weeks without justification) and demand the refund of wrongly paid amounts.

What if a contract was foisted on me?

Then it is often already doubtful whether an effective contract came about, especially with a phone conclusion without a confirmation in text form. Revoke as a precaution, dispute the contract and stop the direct debits.
