Bürgergeld despite savings? Protected assets shield you
You need Bürgergeld but have something in the account or a life insurance policy? You do not have to use everything up first: the 'protected assets' remain untouched, and especially in the first year (the grace period) the limits are generous.

Frequently asked questions
Do I have to use up my savings first before I get Bürgergeld?
No, not up to the amount of the protected assets. Especially in the one-year grace period, substantial asset allowances are protected. Only 'realizable' assets beyond that must be used first. A reasonable owner-occupied property and a reasonable car are disregarded.
What does not count as realizable assets?
Among other things, assets within the allowances, a reasonable owner-occupied apartment or house, a reasonable motor vehicle, protected retirement provision and household goods. If protected assets are nonetheless counted against you, an objection is worthwhile.
