Bürgergeld despite savings? Protected assets shield you

You need Bürgergeld but have something in the account or a life insurance policy? You do not have to use everything up first: the 'protected assets' remain untouched, and especially in the first year (the grace period) the limits are generous.

Application / objection

Your chances of getting your money back

In the first year of receiving benefits (the grace period), substantial assets remain protected (as a rule a high allowance for the first person and a further one for each additional person in the household). A reasonable owner-occupied property and a reasonable car are also disregarded.
After the grace period, asset allowances still apply. If your application is refused because of assets that are actually protected, you can file an objection.

What you should do now

  1. 1

    1. Classify your assets

List your assets (accounts, insurance policies, car, property) and check what counts as protected during the grace period.

  2. 2

    2. File the application

Apply for Bürgergeld at the Jobcenter and state your assets truthfully.

  3. 3

    3. Prove what is protected

Show that assets fall under the allowances or are protected as reasonable (car, owner-occupied home, retirement provision).

  4. 4

    4. Object if refused

If it is refused because of protected assets, file an objection within one month (§ 84 SGG).

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to use up my savings first before I get Bürgergeld?

No, not up to the amount of the protected assets. Especially in the one-year grace period, substantial asset allowances are protected. Only 'realizable' assets beyond that must be used first. A reasonable owner-occupied property and a reasonable car are disregarded.

What does not count as realizable assets?

Among other things, assets within the allowances, a reasonable owner-occupied apartment or house, a reasonable motor vehicle, protected retirement provision and household goods. If protected assets are nonetheless counted against you, an objection is worthwhile.
