What you should do now
- 1
1. Check the deadline
When did you receive the complete documents including the instructions? The 14- or 30-day period runs from then.
- 2
2. Declare the withdrawal
Declare the withdrawal in writing with the policy number. No reason is required.
- 3
3. Reclaim premiums
Premiums already paid must be refunded to you, possibly less the cost of coverage for the period up to the withdrawal.
- 4
4. Secure follow-up cover
For mandatory insurance (for example, motor liability), withdraw only once new coverage is in place.
Frequently asked questions
How long do I have to withdraw from an insurance policy?
Generally 14 days from receipt of all documents and the correct instructions; 30 days for life and pension insurance (§ 8 VVG). Without proper instructions the period does not begin.
Do I get my premiums back?
Yes, paid premiums are generally refunded. If coverage has already begun and you consented to it, a pro-rata amount for the period up to the withdrawal may be retained.
