TikTok account blocked? How to file an appeal and get it back

Your TikTok account is blocked or permanently banned, because of alleged violations of the community guidelines, often after an automatic review. This happens quickly and sometimes wrongly. You can defend yourself: TikTok must justify the block, allow you a free appeal and reinstate a lawful account.

Your chances of getting your money back

There is a usage contract between you and TikTok. A block under the community guidelines is possible, but not arbitrary. TikTok is a very large platform within the meaning of the Digital Services Act (DSA) and must justify the block to you and offer a free appeal procedure.
Many TikTok blocks arise through automatic detection and are lifted again after a factual appeal. If the block was unjustified, you are entitled to reinstatement (usage contract, §§ 280, 1004 BGB).
If TikTok does not respond, you can demand reinstatement in writing with a deadline and call in an out-of-court dispute resolution body certified under the DSA; for an important account an urgent procedure comes into consideration.

What you should do now

  1. 1

    1. Secure the block notice

Screenshots of the notice with the date and reason (which guideline, which video).

  2. 2

    2. Check the justification

TikTok usually shows the status under 'account' or in the history of violations. Under the DSA you are entitled to a specific justification.

  3. 3

    3. File an appeal in the app

Choose 'file objection' at the block or violation notice and explain factually why it is wrong.

  4. 4

    4. Verify identity only officially

Use only the official in-app channel; never send an ID document or login data to alleged 'support' accounts.

  5. 5

    5. Set a deadline

If the appeal does not help, demand reinstatement in writing from the operator with a reasonable deadline; letter free of charge in the letter tool.

  6. 6

    6. Escalate

A certified DSA dispute resolution body or, if of existential importance, a lawyer-led urgent procedure.

  7. 7

    7. Secure data

Demand a data export (Art. 20) and information (Art. 15) under the DSGVO to secure your videos and data.

How to spot the scam

  • An alleged 'TikTok support' account messages you and wants money or your password. That is fraud.
  • 'Unban services' promise a safe unblocking against advance payment. Not reputable.
  • Phishing messages, 'Your account will be deleted, verify now', with a link: do not click.
  • A request to pay outside the app for 'verification'. TikTok does not demand this.

Frequently asked questions

Why was my TikTok account blocked?

Usually because of an alleged violation of the community guidelines, often after an automatic review. In the case of several violations or a serious individual case, the account can be permanently banned. The exact reason is stated in the notice; under the DSA you are entitled to a specific justification.

How do I file an appeal with TikTok?

Directly at the block or violation notice there is the option 'file objection'. Explain factually why the decision is wrong and request reinstatement. The internal procedure is free under the DSA.

What if the appeal is rejected?

Then you can demand reinstatement in writing with a deadline and call in an out-of-court dispute resolution body certified under the DSA. For a business-important account a court urgent procedure can be sensible.

Do I get my videos back?

If the account is reinstated, your videos are usually back too. Independently of this, you can demand a data export (Art. 20) under the DSGVO to secure your content.
