Instagram, Facebook or YouTube blocked? How to get your account back
You open the app and your account is suddenly blocked or deactivated, often without a clear reason. Especially when followers, contacts or your business depend on it, this is a shock. But you are not powerless: the platform must justify the block, allow you a free appeal and reinstate a lawful account. Here are your steps, calmly and in order.

What you should do now
- 1
1. Secure the block notice
Take screenshots of the block or deactivation notice with the date, the exact reason and all references. This is your evidentiary basis for every further step.
- 2
2. Demand a justification
Under the DSA the platform must tell you why it blocked you and which rule you allegedly violated. If the justification is missing, expressly demand it.
- 3
3. File an appeal in the app
Use the platform's internal complaint and appeal procedure (free, usually 'file objection' directly at the block notice). Explain factually why the block is wrong and request reinstatement.
- 4
4. Verify identity only through official channels
If proof of identity is requested, use only the official channel in the app. Never send an ID document or login data to alleged 'support' accounts via message or email.
- 5
5. Set a deadline
If the appeal does not help, demand reinstatement in writing from the operator (with Meta: Meta Platforms Ireland) with a reasonable deadline. You can create the appropriate letter free of charge with the letter tool.
- 6
6. Dispute resolution or urgent procedure
If the block remains, you can call on an out-of-court dispute resolution body certified under the DSA. If your business depends on the account, a court urgent procedure comes into consideration; a lawyer can help you (see 'right to a lawyer').
- 7
7. Secure content and data
In parallel, demand a data export (Art. 20) and information (Art. 15) under the DSGVO, so that photos, posts and contacts are not lost, regardless of the outcome of the block.
How to spot the scam
- An alleged 'Meta' or 'Instagram support' account messages you and wants money or your login data. That is fraud, not real support.
- 'Account rescuers' or 'unblocking services' demand advance payment and promise a safe reactivation. That is not reputable.
- An email with a link, 'Your account will be deleted in 24 hours, verify now', pushes you to hurry. Classic phishing; do not click the link.
- You are told to make a payment outside the app for 'verification'. Official platforms do not demand this.
Frequently asked questions
May Instagram or Facebook simply block my account?
The platform may block on the basis of its terms of use, but not arbitrarily. It must justify the block to you under the Digital Services Act and offer a free appeal procedure. The BGH has also ruled that users must be informed of a block and given the opportunity to comment (judgments of 29.07.2021, III ZR 179/20 and III ZR 192/20). If the block was unjustified, you are entitled to reinstatement.
What can I do if my account was blocked without cause?
First secure screenshots of the block notice. Then demand the justification and file the free appeal in the app. If that does not help, demand reinstatement in writing with a deadline and, if necessary, call in a certified dispute resolution body. For business-critical accounts a court urgent procedure can be sensible.
How quickly must the platform respond?
The internal appeal procedure under the DSA is free and is meant to be handled promptly; for your complaint you generally have at least six months. If you set a deadline yourself (e.g. two weeks), you create a clear basis for further steps. There is no fixed statutory processing deadline 'in hours', so do not let yourself be pressured by threats such as '24 hours'.
Do I get my followers, photos and chats back?
If the account is reinstated, content and followers are usually back too. Independently of this, you can demand a data export (Art. 20) and information (Art. 15) under the DSGVO to secure photos, posts and contacts. It is best to secure early what you can still reach.
Are Threads, Facebook and Instagram linked in a block?
With Meta, several services hang on the same account. An Instagram block can therefore also affect Threads. If the main account is reactivated, the linked service generally comes back automatically with it; you usually do not have to have it reactivated separately.
Is it worth getting a lawyer for an account block?
If your account is important, for example because your business, your reach or customer contacts depend on it, and the platform does not respond to the appeal and deadline, legal help can be sensible, especially for an urgent procedure. Through 'right to a lawyer' you can find out whether you are entitled to advice aid or legal aid for proceedings.
