Preparing for the care assessment: how to convince at the MD appointment

The care insurer decides on the care level based on an assessment by the Medical Service (MD). At the appointment, independence and abilities are examined in several modules. Good preparation, above all an honest care diary, is decisive for the correct care level.

Your chances of getting your money back

The care level is based on the degree of independence in several areas of life. Those who document the actual need for help well are more likely to receive the appropriate care level.
A common mistake: at the appointment the person's own condition is glossed over ('I manage'). Describe the limitations honestly and specifically, including on bad days, not only the best moments.

What you should do now

  1. 1

    1. Keep a care diary

Note over one to two weeks with what and how often help is needed (personal hygiene, mobility, nutrition, behavior). That is the most important basis.

  2. 2

    2. Have documents ready

Have doctor's reports, the medication plan, aids and notices ready and show them to the assessor.

  3. 3

    3. Have a person of trust present

A caring relative or care worker should be present at the appointment and point out the need.

  4. 4

    4. Describe honestly

Describe everyday life realistically, including what is no longer possible independently. After the notice, you can object if the care level is too low.

How to spot the scam

  • At the appointment everything is 'talked up' out of pride.
  • There is no care diary, and the need is underestimated.
  • Important doctor's reports are not available.

Frequently asked questions

How can I prepare for the assessment?

Keep a care diary about the actual need for help in advance, have doctor's reports and medication plans ready and make sure that a person of trust is present at the appointment. This way the real need becomes visible.

What is the most common mistake?

Glossing over one's own condition. Many describe only the good moments at the appointment. Describe honestly and specifically what no longer succeeds independently in everyday life, including on bad days.

What if the care level is too low?

Against the notice you can file an objection within one month and request the assessment. With the care diary and medical documents you can justify a higher care level.
