Instagram account blocked or deactivated? How to get it back
You want to open Instagram and read 'Your account has been blocked' or 'deactivated', often with an accusation that does not fit at all. Harmless vacation or everyday photos in particular are sometimes wrongly classified as a violation by the automatic detection. You are not at its mercy: Meta must justify the block, allow you a free appeal and reinstate a lawful account.

Demand reinstatement →Your chances of getting your money back
What you should do now
- 1
1. Secure the block notice
Take screenshots of the notice with the date and exact reason ('nudity', 'spam', 'identity' etc.); this is your basis.
- 2
2. Demand a justification
Under the DSA, Meta must tell you which rule you allegedly violated. If this is missing, demand the justification.
- 3
3. File an appeal in the app
Follow the 'file objection' / 'we disagree' option directly at the block notice and explain factually why it is wrong.
- 4
4. Verify identity only officially
If an ID document is requested, use only the official in-app channel. Never send an ID document or password to alleged 'support' profiles via message.
- 5
5. Set a deadline
If the appeal does not help, demand reinstatement in writing from Meta Platforms Ireland with a reasonable deadline; you create the letter free of charge with the letter tool.
- 6
6. Escalate
If the block remains: a dispute resolution body certified under the DSA or, if of existential importance, a lawyer-led urgent procedure.
- 7
7. Secure data
Demand a data export (Art. 20) and information (Art. 15) under the DSGVO, so that photos and contacts are not lost.
How to spot the scam
- An alleged 'Instagram' or 'Meta support' profile messages you and wants money or your password. That is fraud.
- 'Account rescuers' promise a safe reactivation against advance payment. That is not reputable.
- An email with a link, 'Your account will be deleted in 24 hours, verify now', is classic phishing. Do not click.
- You are told to pay outside the app for 'verification'. Meta does not demand this.
Frequently asked questions
Why was my Instagram account blocked even though I did not post anything prohibited?
It is often due to the automatic detection, which wrongly classifies harmless content as a violation (e.g. 'nudity' on beach or everyday photos). Such false alarms can often be corrected with a factual appeal. In addition, demand the specific justification under the DSA and request reinstatement.
How do I file an appeal with Instagram?
Directly at the block notice there is usually the option 'file objection' or 'we disagree'. Explain briefly and factually why the block is wrong and request reinstatement. The internal procedure is free under the DSA.
What if Meta does not respond to the appeal?
Then you can demand reinstatement in writing with a deadline from Meta Platforms Ireland and call in an out-of-court dispute resolution body certified under the DSA. For business-important accounts a court urgent procedure can be sensible. The BGH requires transparency and a hearing from platforms.
Is Threads blocked too when Instagram is blocked?
Often yes, because both hang on the same Meta account. If Instagram is reactivated, Threads generally comes back automatically with it; you usually do not have to have it reactivated separately.
