Facebook account blocked? File an appeal and get the account back
Suddenly you can no longer get into your Facebook account, because of an alleged violation of the 'community standards' or without a clear reason. First check whether the account was really blocked or whether it was hacked, because the routes differ. In the case of a block by Facebook the rule is: Meta must justify it, give you a free appeal and reinstate a lawful account.

What you should do now
- 1
1. Clarify and secure the situation
Blocked or hacked? Take screenshots of the notice with the date and reason.
- 2
2. Demand a justification
Under the DSA, Meta must tell you which rule you allegedly violated.
- 3
3. File an appeal
Use the internal appeal procedure ('request review') at the block notice and factually request reinstatement.
- 4
4. Verify identity only officially
Provide an ID document only through the official channel, never send it to alleged support profiles.
- 5
5. Set a deadline
If Meta does not respond, demand reinstatement in writing from Meta Platforms Ireland with a deadline; letter free of charge in the letter tool.
- 6
6. Escalate
A certified DSA dispute resolution body or, for an important account, a lawyer-led urgent procedure.
- 7
7. Secure data
Demand a data export (Art. 20 DSGVO) and information (Art. 15) to secure photos, posts and contacts.
How to spot the scam
- An alleged 'Facebook' or 'Meta support' profile messages you and wants money or login data. Fraud.
- Pages or profiles that offer a 'guaranteed unblocking' against advance payment are not reputable.
- Phishing emails, 'Your account will be deleted, confirm now', with a link: do not click.
- A request to pay outside Facebook for 'verification'. Meta does not demand this.
Frequently asked questions
May Facebook simply block my account?
On the basis of the community standards yes, but not arbitrarily and not non-transparently. The BGH has ruled that Meta must inform you of blocks and post deletions and give you the opportunity to comment; terms without this procedure are invalid (judgments of 29.07.2021, III ZR 179/20 and 192/20). If the block was unjustified, you are entitled to reinstatement.
Is my account blocked, or was it hacked?
This is important to distinguish. In the case of a takeover by strangers (e.g. changed email/password, strange posts in your name), acting quickly counts: reset the password, backup codes, warn contacts. In the case of a block by Facebook itself, it is about appeal, justification and reinstatement.
What can I do if the appeal achieves nothing?
Demand reinstatement in writing with a deadline from Meta Platforms Ireland and call in an out-of-court dispute resolution body certified under the DSA. For a business-important account a court urgent procedure can be sensible.
Do I get my photos and posts back?
If the account is reinstated, content is usually back too. Independently of this, you can demand a data export (Art. 20) and information (Art. 15) under the DSGVO to secure photos, posts and contacts.
