Applying for citizen's benefit: how to file the initial application correctly
Citizen's benefit secures the subsistence minimum if your income is not enough. You file the application with the job center. Important: even an informal notification often preserves the claim from the first of the month; you do not have to wait until all documents are complete.

What you should do now
- 1
1. Submit the application informally
Report the need to the job center immediately (informal is sufficient) so that the claim is preserved from the start of the month. Have the receipt confirmed.
- 2
2. Compile the documents
ID, rental contract, bank statements, proof of income, proof regarding other people in the household (community of need).
- 3
3. State the housing costs
State rent and heating costs; in the grace period the actual, reasonable costs of accommodation are covered.
- 4
4. Check the decision
Check the decision carefully (standard rate, housing costs, deductions). If something is not right, you can file an objection within one month.
How to spot the scam
- You are told that you can only file an application after submitting all documents, which is not true.
- Housing costs are cut without a justification.
- Income is credited twice or incorrectly.
Frequently asked questions
From when do I get citizen's benefit?
As a rule from the first of the month in which you file the application. That is why it is important to register the need early, even informally. You can submit missing documents later.
Which documents do I need?
ID, rental contract, current bank statements, proof of income and details of all people in the household. The job center will name the specific list; submit missing proof promptly.
Are my savings credited?
In the first period (grace period) an increased protected amount applies, and the actual housing costs are recognized. Only after that do stricter limits apply. The details are governed by the SGB II.
